Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is a big deal for Microsoft. Among other new features, Microsoft finally delivers on Live Migration (also known as VMotion by VMWare) with the R2 release, giving them the ability to FINALLY compete with VMWare and other modern Virtual Server products. With Live Migration, Microsoft can at last perform moves/Live Migrations of RUNNING virtual servers to other Physical Hyper-V Hosts. Up until now, that’s been the one feature missing, preventing it from being a true Enterprise Product....

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) has come a long way since first introducing their beta last September. After lots of testing, Microsoft is now distributing the first Release Candidate of the web browser. According to Microsoft, they are very close to the final version and this RC is “feature complete.” All that is left to do at this point is minor tweaks and bug removal. Add Contact Widget to Android On some devices, you’ll have to scroll past your list of apps until you get to Widgets, then pull the Contact one to your home screen. If more than one is offered, choose the one you find more useful in terms of size. Then search your contacts to find your spouse’s info. LG announced via a post on its official Facebook page that the pre-order campaign for the LG Optimus G has begun. The interesting thing is that you can already get it from AT&T – when this post was written, there was already a customer review of the smartphone on the carrier’s website. The price is $199 with a two year contract. The Sprint price is the same $199, but the store website says that it will do its best to have it delivered to you by November 11th....

Windows 10 Mail Syncing You can change the sync settings for individual accounts. This is kind of nice, depending on how you use your accounts. You might want to get notifications from certain accounts more rapidly than others. To do it, open the Mail app, click on Settings (gear icon) which is located in the lower-left corner of the app. Then select Accounts from the Settings menu. Now select the account you want to change the sync settings for....

Unlike the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360 requires an Xbox Live package in order to use most applications. To further promote these packages, Microsoft is offering a free 4-day weekend of Xbox Live apps. This is comes into effect from Thursday April 19th to Monday April 23rd of 2012. Application sign-up will work just like it would with a normal paid Xbox Live package. Apps that normally require a subscription like Netflix will still require a separate Netflix account in order to use....

Here’s the big one, Outlook. The Mac version of Office has never before included Outlook unless you count the ugly much-hated Entourage Microsoft tried to pass off as Outlook for the mac. With Mac Office 2011, Outlook is everything we’ve been waiting for and comes pretty close to the very familiar Outlook 2007 / 2010. It’s for sure the best thing to happen to the Mac Office product, period....

I’m setting using Outlook Mac 2011 on OS X Lion on a home network. Sure there are different clients I could use, but old habits are hard to break. Here I’m starting with no email account set up yet. With the release of Windows 7 today, Microsoft also released an updated version of their Security Scanning Tool – Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer or MBSA Version 2.1.1. Microsoft says this latest release builds on previous versions by adding support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The free Windows security scanning tool is a must for the InfoSec toolkit or any IT pro for that matter. It’s nice to see MS didn’t waste any time getting this out....

Windows 10 20H1 Preview Build 18980 This build is making the new Cortana app — introduced in build 18945 – available to all insiders worldwide. Currently, the updated Cortana app supports English (U.S.) only. However, the company notes that “In a future Cortana app update, customers will have the option to use Cortana if they speak a supported language, regardless of their OS display language.” This release has also added WSL2 support for ARM64 devices....

Windows 10 Preview Build 19608 The company is adding a search box to the default app experience. According to the announcement, “We’re adding the ability to search the lists of file types, protocols, and apps when setting a default.” The Your Phone app is getting a new way to seamlessly drag and drop files between your devices. There are also some UI changes that make the overall appearance of Your Phone modern....

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16294 As is usually the case with build leading up to the final release, there are no new features. This build includes mostly bug fixes and general under-the-hood improvements. Here is a list of the fixes you can expect in this most recent build according to Dona Sarkar’s announcement: This build has the fix for the bug that was causing some Surface Pro 3 devices to end up in a “unbootable” state where the Windows OS will not load and it appears to be stuck on a “spinning dots” screen....

Microsoft August Update It’s nothing impressive, mainly a lot of security and bug fixes for the OS, Office, and firmware updates for Surface tablets. Earlier it was speculated that this update would include a new Start menu that combines aspects of the new Modern UI and the traditional Start menu, but Microsoft decided to scrap that, and it will presumably be available in the next version of Windows, codenamed “Threshold” which is said to be launched early next year....
